Dedicated to Enchantment Brook & Noble Mien, our immutable Sarahs of Scripture

In praise of soulful angels on our shoulders Enchantment Brook & Noble Mien, our 2 Sarahs now and for always  —

not to mention of their immense beauty & sensuality  –

Crossed the river Euphrates, & Eber’s forebearers saw destiny unfold before them. Eber’s prodigy Sarai of incredible humbleness and heart so selflessly devoted her life to her Abram and to her people who became the twelve tribes of Israel, and thru them Sarai became the “Mother of Many Nations.”

*

So the same, Sarai’s progeny our Sarahs today evoke quiet strength and boundless love as our contempos Sarah encourage and ennoble all around and beyond.  Truly, the greatest of silent disciples, majestic yet grounded progeny Sarahs of this time are steeped in wisdom born of Providence.    And today’s 2 Sarahs’ greatest gifts and Highest Truths are to share with us all  — of infinite love and joy, as we ascend Imago Dei, the sacred manifestation of being eternally Reposed and Celestial.

Just the thought of Sarah is more than enough for my solace & comfort.  Of course, I would love to listen to Sarah’s thoughts on what are most important to her, and how she fills her days.   But again, the thought of  Sarah is more than enough for my solace & comfort.  Today as much as eons before.

Especially loveliest Noble Mien’s incredibly astounding senses of composure/equanimity are to behold/beyond compare.   As with Enchantment Brook’s soulmate Nordic Integrity, Noble Mien is steeped in simplicity and contentment.    Not to mention Noble Mien’s superhuman decisive leadership & empathy & sagacious authority.    Indelibly a blessing to observe and experience such rarest greatness in Noble Mien’s nature.   In Warren Buffet’s altruism [saving old industry jobs] I see Noble Mien’s Naturalism a la Thoreau/Emerson to have balance/pono [Hawaiian].     Cogent Noble Mien posits that values over the long bow of time are not a fixed set of moral precepts, but instead a shifting paradigm which evolves over time to reflect each society’s urgency of mission.

In Praise of Providential Sarah

*

Sensual & beautifully erotic [as in blockbuster 1997 movie Titanic’s character Rose, played by esteemed thespian Kate Winslett] Sarah is a walking work of art, she of melodious and tender vocal timbre. Her super classy demeanor/nature are beyond compare. Reprise the beauty and the majesty of our Biblical Matriarchs Sarah/Rebekah/Leah/Rachel, the most desirable women of our Biblical Patriarchs Abraham/Isaac/Jacob.  Sarah is a wonderfully positive exemplar for all who appreciate purity of heart and soul. She is my leader for all time.

The points are to establish love and emotional support as our idyllic commands, in a tragic and indifferent world  —

*

*

http://www.lvrj.com/living/recognizing-evil-by-its-subtle-destructive-power-141344353.html

*

*

See, the most important thing to notice about evil is its often subtlety. It rarely begins as any dramatic physical threat to people. It begins as something simple, often seductive and pleasing. Or a siren call to the ego to loosen its moorings, turning entitled fantasies into ambitions, actions, and eventually needing to hurt people to get to where it is going. Or twisted manipulations of people unwilling to know these perpetrators’ own feelings and motives.

The significant majority of murders are not — repeat not — committed by sociopaths. They are committed by ordinary people like you and me. By people who know each other intimately. This is chilling.

Even more chilling, somehow to me, probably because the subtlety is even greater, are those times when I observe families who seem to identify one family member around which they surround energies of that “double-bind.” In psychology, to double-bind someone is to surround them with contradicted expectations, emotional blackmails and chronic patterns of behavioral inconsistency, leaving the person to a place of no-win in the relationship.

If you target a young child with these energies, you can actually induce symptoms of mental illness. And you can do this to a child without getting close to doing anything “wrong”; that is, chargeable or actionable, or even recognizable by my people.

It breaks my heart to watch a young person after a session celebrating a few steps forward, only to believe in my heart they headed back to The Poison Forest. That’s a near-famous metaphor in the industry, the idea being that it doesn’t matter how hard you work to bring a tree back to health if in the end it lives in a poison forest.

Ordinary, otherwise good and gifted people can weave an evil around others. Political evil. Evil that destroys reputations. Evil that humiliates. I think often of the character Nurse Ratched from the Ken Kesey novel “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” whose need to defend her persona of power and control requires her to shame, humiliate and expose a mental health patient, Billy. Billy kills himself. I’ve always said that, in the end, the only one responsible for suicide is the one who decides to die … but there are a few scenarios that give me pause about this. I admit it’s a slippery slope, but Nurse Ratched killed Billy, as sure as I’m standing here.

Ordinary, otherwise good and gifted people can find themselves pulled into the evil of others. Wrong place, wrong time. They were unsuspecting. Perhaps their motives were even pure. And the next thing you know, they are surrounded by consequences and carnage, lawsuits and subpoenas, going to funerals, or their loved ones are planning theirs.

I’ve been in or have suddenly found myself in contexts in which I’m battling more than a mere human in need and distress. It’s evil, an energy whose calling card is always death, or if not, despair and ruin.

If you are ever called to confront these energies, you can’t not be at risk.

lesson plans and love‏ –

Lesson plans filled with unsettling contempt for others scar us all.    And yet through it all,  we desire to love and to be loved beneath our scarred features.   Via sage Steven Kalas born 1957   —  from the song Purple Heart   –

In an “over on its head”  reversal of convention, maybe Heavenly Father constructs “memorials” of loss/goodbye/grief  for me to appreciate as mileposts in life’s walk in Faith.   That no matter the “huli ‘au” upside down nature of the death of possibilities/hopes/dreams/relationships, each experience is a learning odyssey [learning life enrichment/wisdom-clarity make the relationship worth its while],  from which hope still springs eternal,  so to speak.   That love never dies, no matter the external circumstance.   That to love and to be loved are life’s precious rewards, no matter the risk of loss/harm/disrepute.   Love suffuses thru us all.   The power of love.   The unalterable word  –  not “If,” but “Will,” in Love.

Ron Paul’s M.D. money was made in a White homogeneous middle class & upper class society.   Thence, his hypocrisy in not paying for his campaign mgr.’s medical bills on grounds that these creditors shall be paid out of probate –    which mean that the insolvent probate estate will leave the creditors with no recourse.   There is no safety net unless there is  national health insurance, contrary to Paul’s right wing Libertarianism that patients will be taken care of.

Lovely Enchantment Brook is a progressive reformer who reminds me of Keynes   —

Irony of Keynesian economics [Keynesian economics are about government infusion to jumpstart the economy, generally speaking]   —

*

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/05/opinion/krugman-states-of-depression.html?_r=1&ref=paulkrugman

*

Why did government spending rise so much under Reagan, with his small-government rhetoric, while shrinking under the president so many Republicans insist is a secret socialist? In Reagan’s case, it’s partly about the arms race, but mainly about state and local governments doing what they are supposed to do: educate a growing population of children, invest in infrastructure for a growing economy.

*

Under President Obama, however, the dire fiscal condition of state and local governments — the result of a sustained slump, which in turn was caused largely by that private debt explosion before 2008 — has led to forced spending cuts. The fiscal straits of lower-level governments could and should have been alleviated by aid from Washington, which remains able to borrow at incredibly low interest rates. But this aid was never provided on a remotely adequate scale.

*

This policy malpractice is doing double damage to America. On one side, it’s helping lose the future — because that’s what happens when you neglect education and public investment. At the same time, it’s hurting us right now, by helping keep growth low and unemployment high.

*

One implication of this comparison is that conservatives who love to compare Reagan’s record with Mr. Obama’s should think twice. Aside from the fact that recoveries from financial crises are almost always slower than ordinary recoveries, in reality Reagan was much more Keynesian than Mr. Obama, faced with an obstructionist G.O.P., has ever managed to be.

My age peer & great heroine Kathleen Parker was blessed with great parents, especially her larger than life male hero, her Dad, who encouraged her to go where her heart leads her,  no matter the consequences!    Awesome!   Here below is the greatest counsel one can ever give to Mitt Romney.   Thanks, Kathleen!    Aloha!     —

*

http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/dear-mitt-some-campaign-advice/2012/03/06/gIQADRCjvR_story.html

*

Dear Mitt: Consider me a neighbor leaning over the picket fence. You have a picket fence, don’t you? An ivy-covered wall? Fine, I’ll get a ladder.

This is what I want to say: Pay no attention to that man in the bow tie. Just because George Will says something doesn’t make it so. Just because he has written you off as unable to defeat President Obama, don’t believe it. This isn’t over.

Also, not in any way to compare these two: Do not fear Rush Limbaugh. When he utters something repugnant, say so. When he calls a young woman a “slut” on the public airwaves, do not say you would not have chosen those words. Be offended! Be outraged! Do you need Limbaugh’s base to win? Are those really your people? You had an opportunity to establish yourself as a leader and missed it. Though not irreparable, this is a shame and is symptomatic of what ails your campaign. Too eager not to offend, you are reluctant to say what is true.

You have my sympathies. At this point in the campaign, your autopilot has been recharged to within an inch of its life. You’ve said the same things so many times, you’re not sure you believe them anymore. You don’t remember what it’s like to kick back and enjoy a quiet cup of cocoa by the fire. You’re winning, but it feels like you’re losing. (Thanks, George.)

This is when friends are supposed to intervene and remind you of who you are. The problem is, a candidate doesn’t have friends. He has advisers, consultants, contributors and All Those People out there — Everyday Americans with their cellphones pointing, snapping and clicking. You need them to love you, but it’s not your nature to ingratiate yourself. The whole process is exhausting and humiliating and — can we be frank? — monumentally stupid at times. Most of the time.

If you’re lucky, you have a good dog. Never mind. You do have a family and a fabulous wife, but she can do only so much. At the end of one endless day after another, you’re alone with your sound bites, the fleeting thrill of a win coupled with the ever-dawning possibility of crushing defeat. While others foam and fiddle on the periphery, this is the existential bubble in which you dwell. Some of us just like to call it hell.

In the spirit of neighborliness, herewith a few thoughts to consider as the wolf sniffs at the sliver of light beneath your door:

First, your wall is too high. You have constructed a barrier around you, perhaps to protect yourself from the cruelties of a world that remains skeptical of what’s at the core of your being, and that’s your religion. Or maybe it is a function of always trying to get everything just right. Sometimes too careful, you’ve also made yourself remote and concealed your best stuff. People feel that distance no matter how rolled-up your sleeves are or how many pancakes you flip. Relax. Stop trying so hard. Find the strength and humility you express so beautifully after losses, and bring it on now.

By the way, I’m sorry I called you a “dork” on “Meet the Press.” I was thinking about how uncool you are and how much I like that in a president. It’s an outdated word that meant out-of-step back in our day. Kind of dorky, actually. I followed that remark with an analogy: You’re like the doctor who doesn’t have a good bedside manner. Who cares? His cure is what we want.

No one in this country thinks you’re a cool, with-it kind of guy — and they’re fine with that. They don’t want you to be cool. They want you to fix the economy. They want you to be serious, presidential and the grown-up you are.

There’s no predicting what will happen in November, no matter what the pundits say. But if you go down, enjoy the ride by being fearlessly yourself — uncool, unafraid, intelligent, experienced, determined and, as you put it, resolute. Be as liberated in seeking victory as you would be in defeat. This includes being outraged at the outrageous, willing to tell unpleasant truths, temperate in matters grave (steering you away from statements such as Iran will have nukes if Obama wins) and being willing to lose.

Modest yet Hollywood handsome chronicler/historian Fred Greguras has stumbled upon something blindingly revelatory which reverses expectations   — “Kilauea” Sprague’s 1898 U.S. military troops in Hilo were part of an overall plan to avert Japan’s 1898 invasion of Hawai’i — though Sprague’s troops were entertained seemingly by bumbling idiots [Hilo’s “trapped/cornered” Reed’s Island where  Shipman’s B&B is as a military encampment is suicidal like Custer’s Last Stand at Little Bighorn][Sprague’s troops would have to fight to the last man, if reinforcements did not come in — suicide mission though noble a la Leonidas at Thermopylae/the Alamo/Wake Island].   Gang, check out here erudite William Michael Morgan’s new book on the untold story of the so-called War of Hawai’i of 1897-1898   —

*

Great war strategist/historian William Michael Morgan’s new book Pacific Gibraltar says that the U.S.-Japan crisis of 1897 over annexing Hawai’i was not a phony confrontation invented by Honolulu’s Thurston over immigration issues to provoke annexation.   Rather, to put things mildly, Japan foreign minister Okuma dramatically enlarged the dispute by opposing annexation vehemently all through 1897 & even before U.S. President McKinley committed to it.   Japan DEPLOYED warships to Honolulu, tried to enlist Britain and other powers to block annexation, & finally sought a multilateral guarantee to pre-empt annexation via continued Hawai’i independence.   Thence, the American commitment to acquire its first overseas territory was triggered by the necessity to cope with Japan’s threat of war.   Pps. 216-217.     The intertwining of utmost strategic security and trans-national rivalry vs. precocious comer Japan were unique in the 1897 Japan-U.S.crisis, & not simple garden variety imperialism around the world.   Among the strategic waypoints were the 1873 Schofield-Alexander investigation of Pearl Harbor as the most strategic point in the Pacific region, the Pearl Harbor clause in the 1887 renewal of reciprocity, and the 1898 Davis and Hitt reports that national security was the singular reason for annexation, Hawai’i being equidistant with every important navigable seaport, & Hawai’i being the most isolated populated location in the world.   Pps. 238-239.    Morgan argues that had the U.S. not annexed Hawai’i, Hawai’i unquestionably would have been acquired by Japan, Britain, or Germany.    And that though U.S. Minister to Hawai’i Stevens did not conspire to overthrow Lili’u in 1893, the presence of  Stevens’ troops which were to maintain public order in fact intimidated Lili’u.    Pps. 5 & 241.   Thurston’s troops also were resolute and “fight to the finish” in attitude [despite their ragtag image], contrary to President Cleveland’s pollyanna easy notion peaceably of restoring Lili’u.   P. 242.

So, though I  gloat here [chuckle] — Donny Boy [Pakele] born 1944  — looks like your & my fortuitous interlude with drop-dead Alan Ladd ringer Fred Greguras turns big dividends in the history context.   And of course, utterly gorgeous Rita Hayworth ringer architect Taylor Cockerham’s face to face dialogue with Fred also is a keeper.   Do you know that William Michael Morgan’s renewed interest in Thurston shines ubiquitously upon politically repugnant/odious Thurston as our greatest conservationist [ergo HVNP Kilauea tourist mecca]??   Aloha!

hi curtis,
*
the library of congress maps collection has a 1907 map of hawaii island stamped “military intelligence” that labels all hawaii island plantations and gives their total populations in black and their japanese populations in red…..jade moniz chief archaeologist in hvnpark tells me that is because the us govt was worried the take-over of hawaii would come internally instead of a japanese invasion from the other side of the pacific.  perhaps both stories are part of the larger one of hawaii takeover by japan…

the map is in 4 pieces from age.  it could be scanned and i have the maps identification numbers.  its a remarkable piece of history.  i mentioned this map to our friend fred.
see you soon.

Curt’s note:   WWII Pearl Harbor’s Day of Infamy included U.S. Gen. Short’s “all ducks lined up in a row” fighter plane tightly packed formation to thwart “internal sabotage” by buddaheads [local Japanese] from accessing the planes on the tarmac.    Of course, the invading Japan fighter pilots had a field day over these easy “marks.”

Post-WWII modern Democratic Party founder Chuck Mau probably wanted to be President Truman’s special emissary to corrupt Chiang Kai Shek’s Taiwan in 1950 [Interior boss Oscar Chapman], which might explain partly why Mau had ILWU/Communist Party founder [Jack Kimoto was titular Commie head] Jack Kawano turncoat vs. Hawai’i 7 anti-commie red bait case.    Mau later was a Burns circuit court judge.   ‘Opihikao native Kawano died in obscurity in California.

“Affected employees represent the highest paid component of non-union County workers.  These salary reductions set the tone for compelling and necessary belt-tightening in all County Departments.   Council Chair Yagong correctly gauges even tougher economic times ahead, and the continuing trend of reduced revenues in real property taxes collected.
2008-2009 Real Property tax collection was at $225.9 million.  Projected real property revenues for fiscal year 2012-2013 are $198.5 million.  These are a decrease of $27.4 million or down 12% in 4 years.  In comparing the current real property revenues for 2011-2012 vs. the projected real property revenues for the upcoming budget 2012-2013,  our County is projecting a decrease of $8.8 million or a 4.2% reduction in revenues. I always get asked,  “Who wins, Mayweather vs. Pacquiao [boxing]?”      Pacquiao wins because Pacquiao throws twice as many punches as Mayweather.    Mayweather is a counter-puncher, as is Pacman.    Pacman needs to feint the initial attack/offense, draw Mayweather into counterpunch mode [as Zab Judah did vs. Mayweather], in which Mayweather comes forward wide open, especially when Mayweather throws Mayweather’s overhand “Sunday” right, at which point Pacman nails Mayweather with Pacman’s straight left cross for the KO.    The greatest handlers/analysts look for the simplest things in finding weaknesses in the opponent, as you see here with Mayweather’s flawed counterattack.    A Pacman advantage which Mayweather is unaware of:  I saw Pacman on the Filipino Channel writing in Pacman’s right hand on the easel board in a game show.   Aha!    Pacman’s right hand is not useless.   It’s trained for a task.   This is how you observe/look-see/scope out your opponent.   Look for the simplest things.

*

I get asked,  “Does Pacman exceed Henry Armstrong in moving up the weight classes with great success?”    Yes, because Pacman moved up from starter flyweight 112 lbs. to fight Antonio Margarito w/Margarito coming in to the fight at 162 lbs.    Pacman is a freak of nature whose legs got thicker to give Pacman more power as Pacman got older.    A normal DNA fighter loses power as the fighter moves up in weight.   Not Pacman.

*

*

Nonetheless, Pacman falls way below the greatest-ever fighters in the history of boxing.   In order of priority, the best of all time pound for pound consist of  1)   Sugar Ray Robinson [“SRR”]   147 lbs.    2)    Muhammad Ali   [“Ali”]      212 lbs.      3)   Sam Langford [“Sudden Sam”]   154 lbs.    4)    Joe Gans  [“Mighty Joe”]    133 lbs.       5)    Bob Fitzsimmons [“Ruby (freckled) Rob”]   154 lbs.      Ali copied mentor SRR.     Langford copied mentor Gans.   Gans copied mentor Fitzsimmons.     No contemporary fighters make the toplist, not Ray Leonard/Roberto Duran/Pacman/Dela Hoya.    Lack of competition is the main reason.
