Biblical Paul was overwhelmed with the recollection that he had been a persecutor.

Is Grace God’s Unmerited Favor?

*

Many today have a false view of “grace” (Greek charis). To them “grace” in the New  Testament means “unmerited favor.” It does mean “favor” but they add the word “unmerited”  to it in order to uphold heresies like unconditional eternal security and other errors.  let us look at how the word is used in Scripture as it become readily apparent that such a  definition is nonsensical.

If “grace” (charis) is “unmerited favor” like most theologians and preachers like to  suggest, then how did Jesus grow in it?

Luke 2:52
52  And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour [charis] with God and man.

How did Mary find “unmerited favor” with God?

Luke 1:30
30  And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour [charis] with  God.

Why are Jesus’ words called “gracious” (charis) if it means more than just favor?

Luke 4:22
22  And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious [charis] words which proceeded  out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph’s son?

Why does Jesus use the word for something that is merited or earned, that of receiving  thanks?

Luke 6:32-34
32  For if ye love them which love you, what thank [charis] have ye? for sinners also love  those that love them.
33  And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank  [charis] have ye? for  sinners also do even the same.
34  And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank [charis] have ye? for  sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again.

Luke 17:9
9  Doth he thank [charis] that servant because he did the things that were commanded him?  I trow not.

Why are believers told to continue in the grace of God if the idea is that of something  not merited and that cannot be kept by merit?

Acts 13:43
43  Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes  followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace  [charis] of God.

Does God need unmerited favor from us?

Romans 6:17
17  But God be thanked [charis], that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from  the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.

1 Corinthians 15:57
57  But thanks [charis] be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus  Christ.

2 Corinthians 2:14
14  Now thanks [charis] be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and  maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.

The point of this article is not to say that the grace of God is merited, rather it is to say that  the definition of “grace” IS NOT “unmerited favor.” Such a definition is adding to the plain meaning of the  word and inserting error into the Scripture. The Scriptural context of each time “grace” is used  determines what is intended and if it means that the favor was not merited (Romans 4:4-5; 2  Timothy 1:9; etc.), or if it means that the favor was merited (like in Luke 1:30; 6:32-34; 17:9; etc.). Let us be diligent to search the Scriptures and use them to arrive at accurate definitions that do not add to or take away from the plain meaning of the Scripture!

Why is the “unmerited favor” idea so problematic? The “unmerited favor” idea dates back to Gnosticism, like most errors in the church today. It is needed in order to keep unconditional eternal security afloat (the idea that people are secure in Christ to sin as much as they want). If “favor” cannot be merited or kept by merit then you can murder, rape, steal, and do whatever you want and could never stop having that favor. It is a serious error, because of how it plays out in people’s practice. It causes them to live beneath the high standards of Christ and to the “do what thou wilt” theology that Gnosticism, Augustine, paganism, and Satanism teach.

When it comes to helping people in need, one of the stories that should spark our imagination remains Jesus’ parable of the good Samaritan

The aspect of the parable I would point out here is its personal nature [very specific]

To demonstrate how (and to whom) we ought to show compassion Jesus does not speak in generalities.

He gives a specific situation,

*

where one individual (the Samaritan) must make a decision about how

*

to treat another specific individual (the Jew set upon by robbers). 

*

Christian mercy is not about generalized theories,

*

but about specifics.

Since Jesus lived in an oral culture,

scholars expect that short, memorable stories or phrases

*

as applications of Scripture

*

are from Jesus.

dramatic presentation and reversal of expectations that are characteristic of Jesus.

Based on several important narrative parables [such as the Parable of the Good Samaritan],

scholars decided that irony, reversal, and frustration of expectations were characteristic of Christ’s style.  

*

Does a pericope/concise passage illustrate opposites or impossibilities?  

*

If it does, it’s more likely to be authentic. 

*

One-third of the Bible consists of Parables/Pericopes/aphorisms.

The poor are accepted as constituting the primary recipients of the Good News and, therefore,

That’s pretty threatening for any comfortable Christian.

For not only do we have to help the poor, not only do we have to advocate on their behalf, we also have to see them as understanding God better than we do!

But that’s not a new idea:

It goes back to Jesus.

The poor, the sick and the outcast “got” Him better than the wealthy did.

*

Perhaps because there was less standing between the poor and God.

*

Less stuff [pride].

Maybe that’s why Jesus said in the Gospel of Matthew, “You will have treasure in heaven, and follow me.”

I found my purpose.  I felt a clarity that had eluded me my whole life.  Sometimes today, if I get too distracted by matters of this world (vis a vis my missions to love and to be loved), I push myself to remember that clarity.

*

The word “rebirth” is certainly a bit worn out, clichéd at best and tedious at worst.  But after what we’ve been through, I find myself making an effort to be more charitable with other people’s words.  The crisis of the crash — six years ago now — changed me in ways that I’m still coming to grips with. Perhaps most importantly, faith, in both general and specific senses, is now something that I don’t shy away from, that I don’t seek to avoid either as a sensation or a topic of conversation.  In fact, faith has become an odd kind of tether to those terrible early days in the hospital.  It’s a conduit to the purpose, meaning and love I found there in those dark moments by my son’s bedside, days which remain, in the strangest of ways, the most solaced of my life.
