7 Ways to Build Inner Strength

*

I have been reflecting on the subject of “Inner Strength” all week, as I will be going on-air with the phenomenal women on the Mulberry Lane Show this Saturday discussing how to find Inner Strength and nourish it.

We all have times where we feel weakened or depleted, and isn’t it a wonderful thing to know that we really can do something to make ourselves stronger?

Inner Strength is that energy inside of us that helps us to rise above FEAR and PAIN, grab FAITH and HOPE, and stand back up to move toward a PURPOSEFUL life. ~ Dr. Karin Smithson

It’s about finding the positive rays of sunlight after the storm clouds clear and building ourselves up day to day, keeping focus on our calling. It is then believing in the fortitude of our spirits, and the resilience of our souls, to survive.  We were created to survive!

“You have power over your mind – not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.”  ~Marcus Aurelius

Since part of survival is accepting that you cannot change outside circumstances or people, you can only change yourself, let’s focus on a few things that can help you feel stronger.

7 WAYS TO BUILDING INNER STRENGTH

  1. Develop and nurture a spiritual connection to a Higher Power – then ask for help
  2. Seek guidance from your spirit and find power in your intuition
  3. Focus on the purposeful calling of your entire life past the emotional toll of the crisis … because it will be “past” one day
  4. Lean on your “Trusted Few” friends & family who know YOU and your story & who will remind you how wonderful you are … and that you will make it.
  5. Look back on the survival instincts of your past. Remind yourself of times when you got through tough times and see strength in your own resilience
  6. Make real attempts to be surrounded by positive people and positive atmospheres that make you feel good, energized and motivated.  Limit any time around negative people or energy. EXIT if you are starting to feel bad about yourself.
  7. Keep a “Feel Good Folder” of emails, letters, compliments and reminders that tell you how fabulous you are. Anytime you receive a compliment or praise, print it up and keep it. I promise you will find strength from those words one day.

Remember, having Inner Strength does not mean that you are strong ALL of the time. Impossible.  We all have crises and traumas that surprise us with feelings of weakness for a time.  Inner Strength is about the ability to pull oneself out of the crisis once the emotional work has been done and find a way to have HOPE and FAITH that things will get better.  And then do what you need to do to get to a place of meaning again in your life.

Your mental focus and belief systems have the power to create or to destroy.

Dr. Henry Beecher of Harvard Medical School proved that the brain has the ability to override the effects of drugs. The power of belief is absolutely crucial to healing and health. He spent much of his career studying beliefs that make the internal healing energy come alive.  He proved that belief systems can be an integral part of healing ourselves and making medicine more effective.

In one research study Dr. Beecher used 100 student volunteers. He had each volunteer take two test drugs. One drug was in a red capsule, the other was in a blue. He told the students that the red capsules were a super stimulant. When you take these and they’re going to make you feel wired, very stimulated, rapidly. The other drug in the blue capsules, were said to be a tranquilizer that rapidly made you feel relaxed, calm, even sleepy.

In reality, what Dr. Beecher had done was reversed the drugs in the capsules.  The red capsule actually was a powerful barbiturate and the blue capsule contained a strong amphetamine. But the interesting thing that Dr. Beecher observed was that the students reacted as they thought the pills were supposed to be, not as they actually were.

In other words, the red capsule which they had been told was a stimulant was actually a barbiturate. Yet, they felt hyper, they revved up, their hearts rates increased, their body sensations became more acute and their brain waves became more excited.

And when they took the blue capsule, which they were told was a tranquilizer but was actually an amphetamine they reacted to it as if it really was a tranquilizer.

With the blue capsule their heart rate slowed, their body sensations diminished, their brain waves became more lethargic.  In many cases they felt like they wanted to sleep.  Their bodies aligned with their beliefs, not with the drug that they had actually taken.

The power of the brain and belief system overrode the actual drug and reversed the effect.  Amazing!

Your beliefs control your reality. What you believe to be real is real for you.  People treat beliefs as if they are a thing, an object, but they aren’t. They are just a concept and a feeling of certainty about something. It’s that feeling of knowing. It’s that feeling of ‘yes, this is true’.

Your gut feeling about a person, place, thing, piece of knowledge, your body, etc., is what makes the belief come alive. Your feeling supports and empowers your belief systems.  It’s the feeling you engage when you evaluate things that gives conviction to your statements, and power behind your beliefs.

For instance, how about the thought of “you are smart”. Well if you compare yourself to other people who are on your level or a little below – if you compare yourself to Jim and Sally and Sandy and Pete, all those friends of yours – then you feel ok and probably see yourself as intelligent.

If you are thinking, “I study effectively, I do well at those things I undertake. I learn fairly quickly compared to others. I retain knowledge well, and tend to remember things probably as long, or longer, than most people do. I feel very comfortable when I’m studying new information. It doesn’t make me uneasy.” If these are your thoughts, all of these come together to support your belief that you’re smart.

But if you were to compare yourself in intelligence to Albert Einstein, Confucius, Margaret Thatcher, Linus Pauling and the gentleman who memorized word for word the entire King James Bible, you may not evaluate yourself quite so highly. You may not feel quite so smart.

Your beliefs about being smart are relative.  Your beliefs about your health are potent and make an impact.  You have amazing potential to be a great you.  Believe in you, and your potential awaiting just below the surface.
