Jim Channon lives in north Kohala near the town of Hawi on a ranch called, “Artesia.” He looks a lot like the famous actor Jeff Bridges, who in 2009, along with actor George Clooney, comedically played characters loosely based on Channon in the comedic war movie, “The Men Who Stare at Goats,” adapted from Jon Ronson’s book. Much of the book was embellishments, inaccuracies, and false conspiracies, but Channon says that the movie came back to him as a “surprise gift.” He says happily that George Clooney and Jeff Bridges did his downfield blocking; “they blew a hole in the hairball called the web and I ran right down it throwing my pamphlets.” The book and the movie focus on Channon’s avant garde career in the United States Army, where he was hired to interview, scour, and research “new age, human potential, and high performance training facilities everywhere” which eventually led to a field manual of one hundred and twenty five evolutionary tactics. This was Channon’s first of three careers. He eventually retired from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel and in his second career guided fortune one hundred companies. Before moving here to Hawaii, Channon had lived in fifty different places on four different continents. Now at age 73, he has been on the Big Island for over twenty two years, and during that time he has been ever- expanding into his third career here as a social architect. What this means is that he listens to the dreams and the interests of people in towns and districts on the island and then makes these amazing graphic maps to visually show how the people and the towns can get from where they are to where they want to be.

How My Involvement with The Men Who Stare at Goats Was Erased Entirely

I unearthed a mass of data about obscure military research into enhancing human performance in the early 1980s.  This included Lt Colonel Jim Channon’s remarkable First Earth Battalion manual, which envisioned a revolutionary new cadre of super-soldiers.  It was that research which put us squarely on the trail of the real warrior monks.
